Certified Banger #9

So, the ninth entry into the Certified Banger series is really anything but a banger. But as I've said in the past, this isn't necessarily just a spot to highlight jams like "Hell Yeah", instead, its a place to draw attention to exceptional tracks regardless of genre or pace. On that note, this week's CB is a track off of Mount Eerie's latest LP, Lost Wisdom, entitled "You Swan, Go On."

Like most of the tracks on Lost Wisdom, "You Swan, Go On" is sparse, with nearly anything on the track other than voice, gentle acoustic strumming, subtle percussion and the occasional poignant electric guitar. The track actually reminds me a lot of the best things that came off of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Matt Sweeney's 2005 Superwolf. At 1:33 there isn't a lot that can be said about this track, yet in the short time this track plays I find myself enraptured by the beautiful melody created by Phil Elverum and Julie Doiron and the striking images that the lyrics invoke. Like all great emo, the song is built around a boy/girl narrative with lyrical allusions to love and an even violent longing. Voices tremble and crack all over this track, lending overarching feelings of vulnerability and darkness to it as well.

Yeah, I know, it all sounds a little too emo, but fuck you if you can't enjoy a little emo now and again, especially when it's this beautiful.

As always, check the side bar for the track ---------------------->
